My Haltech Journey | An Interview with Musicology

“Everybody is so supportive. They have the resources at their fingertips. If you need help with anything in your journey, they’re there to guide you. They guide you through things that you didn’t even think that you needed to know.”

– Rebecca Featherstone | Founder & CEO, Musicology

At Haltech, our clients have accomplished so much over the years. Behind every Founder and CEO is a unique and inspiring story. We wanted to take the opportunity to give some of our clients a chance to share the story of their startup journey, and how Haltech has played a role.

Tell us a bit about you

To start off, we first asked Rebbeca who she is and to share a bit about her background. She responded, “Hi my name is Rebecca Featherstone, and I’m the Founder and CEO of Musicology, my background is a music teacher and I have a BA in music.” We followed up by asking her about her company and when it was founded: “Musicology was founded in 2020 and is umbrellaed under my music school, Featherstone Music, which was founded in 2008”.

What was the biggest hurdle you faced before you discovered Haltech?

Rebecca explained that her biggest hurdle before discovering Haltech was “just basic business management skills. Having a B.A. in music I don’t really have those business skills and I was dealing with investors and how to start a tech company, which was completely foreign to me.”. She then followed with how she discovered Haltech. She told us: “I discovered Haltech through my advisor, actually from the BDC. We had a business loan to start Musicology and I did a leadership course with David Quinn. So we sort of became friends after that and he said, ‘you need to join Haltech. It’s a great organization for women in tech.”

What services and mentorship have helped you most?

After Rebbeca told us a bit about herself and her company, we wanted to know how we at Haltech helped her when she first joined. “Haltech helped me out with navigating through all of the ups and downs of startups. Everybody thinks that when they start a company or an app, for example, that it’s going to be so easy and you’re going to be rich all of a sudden. It’s not like that.” She clarified. “And there are so many struggles, so many ups and downs and Haltech really helped me understand that that was okay and that’s a normal procedure of having a startup.”

Furthermore, she tied her next answer to our next question of what services were quite helpful to her start-up. She shared: “The services that Haltech offers that I found the most helpful are definitely the Beyond Boundaries Program. That was fantastic. I learned so much. It was so well organized. I learned things that I didn’t even think that I needed to know.”

She continued by saying: “I love that I can just contact anybody here and they will refer me to somebody. I’ve needed somebody to help me with my They CanExport applications, Haltech referred me. Someone for FedDev, Haltech referred me. A lawyer, Haltech referred me. They just seem to know everybody and anyone.”

What role has Haltech played in your startup journey?

Rebecca shared that “[Haltech has] been there every step of the way, through all of the ups and all of the downs and they’ve been there to guide me through the entire journey.”

What would you tell other entrepreneurs who are thinking of joining Haltech?

Finally, we wrapped up by asking Rebecca what she would tell others entrepreneurs thinking of joining Haltech. Rebecca went on to say: “I would tell other entrepreneurs who are thinking about joining Haltech that it is a wonderful organization. Everybody is so supportive. They have the resources at their fingertips. If you need help with anything in your journey, they’re there to guide you. They guide you through things that you didn’t even think that you needed to know. So it’s – do it. Just join.”
