Haltech Takes on OCE 2019

By May 21, 2019May 24th, 2019News

Between May 13-14 Haltech and Enable Education had the opportunity to be exhibiting neighbors at the 2019 OCE Discovery Tech Conference in Toronto. OCE (Ontario Centre of Excellence) aims to drive the development of Ontario’s economy by helping create new jobs, products, services, technologies, and businesses, and this year’s summit was nothing short from inspiring. Leading Canada’s innovation into commercialization, Discovery 2019 delivered a thought-provoking event where we had the opportunity to engage with some amazing businesses and learn about exciting new and up-and-coming innovations. Here are some of our highlights from the conference:

  1. Duncan Wardle; Embedding Innovation into Everyone’s DNA

We have the pleasure of hearing from Disney’s former Head of Innovation & Creativity and the Founder of iD8 & Innov8 who spoke about fostering creative thinking and innovative corporate culture. He discussed the importance of purpose over quarterly results on how the habit of continually doing things in new ways makes a positive difference to our working lives. The most significant mention over his talk was relating creativity back to our childhood nostalgia and the power of the fifth ‘why’ when again question – because there lies the truth, and this thinking I show Walt Disney himself refined innovation and hospitality.

  1. Young Entrepreneurs, Make Your Pitch Competition

Presented by OCE and the Government of Ontario, the Young Entrepreneurs, Make Your Pitch competition invited high school students to pitch their business ideas in a two-minute video where the twenty finalists had the chance to pitch their ideas live in front of a panel of judges from the entrepreneur community. Based on their pitches, the judges selected six winners that received an entry into the Summer Company program along with a Muse 2 Headband from InteraXon and $750 education voucher. Congratulations to this year’s winners: Nothern Edge, D Target Hockey School, Goddess Girl, Elements of fun, Geogen and The Shop- Youth Auto Sourcing ( See here )

  1. Smart Start Clients

The SmartStart Seed Fund (SmartStart) program supports new ventures led by Ontario’s next generation of entrepreneurs to help transition their start-ups from product development, to market entry and company building. Companies who received funding were able to host booths at the conference and showcase their business. We were delighted to seem so many new and exciting companies, as well as many familiar faces. Congratulations to the Haltech Clients who were won SmartStart and participated in OCE 2019: Green Apple Pay, Ecomaterials, KIDICTED!, House of Anesi and Univjobs.

In attendance and exhibiting this year were our booth neighbours, Enable Education. Be sure to check out the blog below and learn about their takeaways from OCE Discovery 2019!
