About the Speakers

Matthew Kindree, Partner, Pallett Valo LLP

Matthew Kindree is the Head of Pallett Valo’s Business Law Practice. Matt joined the Firm as a Partner in 2018 after several years as a Partner at one of the world’s largest international law firms. Matt has been recognized by Lexpert magazine as a Lexpert Rising Star: Leading Lawyer Under 40, an award recognizing the leading lawyers in Canada under the age of 40. He is certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a Specialist in Corporate and Commercial Law, and by the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada as a specialist in Corporate Finance.

Matt practices and has extensive expertise in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, private equity, banking and finance, and corporate reorganizations and restructurings. He advises domestic and international clients on a wide range of corporate, commercial and regulatory matters across all industries, including the technology, consumer packaged goods, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and transportation industries. His practice also includes counseling start-up enterprises on general business, corporate finance and regulatory matters.

Stephen Beney, Partner, Bereskin & Parr LLP

Stephen Beney is Managing Partner with Bereskin & Parr LLP and Chair of the Executive Committee. He is the Head of the Mississauga office and leads the Medical Devices practice group. Stephen works with clients to assess IP needs, and has helped to secure patents for a diverse array of clients, including start-ups, small- to medium-sized enterprises, major multinational companies and university researchers. He advises on IP management and strategic planning and has prepared many patentability opinions, as well as infringement and validity opinions. Stephen has contributed extensively to patent education in Canada. He has been lecturing and tutoring for the annual IPIC-McGill University Patent Course for several years, and is a past Director of that course. Stephen has also been lecturing and tutoring for the annual IPIC Patent Agent Training Course, both the Drafting & Prosecution Module and the Infringement & Validity Module.

Joanna Ma, Partner, Bereskin & Parr LLP

Joanna Ma is a technology lawyer specialized in patents with an electrical engineering background. She works with companies to identify their intellectual property and to develop an IP strategy that is practical and aligned with their business goals. Joanna is also an IP advisor at several innovation centres across Ontario.
